This watercolor and gouache on paper is based on a broadside advertisement for the exhibtion of the "Monster Panther" shot in 1881 - the last 'catamount' shot in the state of Vermont. A portion of the text reads "An Object Lesson in Natural History - shot dead by Mr. Crowell - Don't fail to see him." My interest in Vermont history stems from having been born there. It's a fascinating state apart, full of stories of strange doings in the hills. The painting is a tribute to a mighty cat, now fallen. He can still be seen on display in Montpelier, a bit tattered and cross-eyed in his glass case, but stunning all the same.
